It’s A Girl!

“It’s a girl!” Often the first words spoken as a female child enters the world. The phrase appears on Cigar bands, announcement cards and in 50 piece packages of buttermints. The exclamation point reflects the revelatory, the ecstatic, the inevitable proclamation at the moment of birth. The child’s genitals reveal gender. Word spreads from there. Already with three boys and one girl in my family, my mom and dad, us kids too, were hoping our mother’s fifth (and final pregnancy) would deliver to us a baby sister. Upon hearing the news that our new sibling was a girl, my brother and I ran down the middle of our street and shouted to stunned neighbors, “It’s a girl! It’s girl!”
